The Solar System, Galaxies, and the Universe
BLAST OFF!!!!!
Students will be ending the
year exploring the universe. We will examine earth’s place in the solar system
and galaxy, and compare it to the scope of the universe. Students will learn
how the sun produces the energy we depend on and compare our sun to other
stars. The life cycle of stars will also be a large part of the unit, as we
explore a star’s beginning stages to its ultimate violent end. Hopefully, the
cold weather won't discourage students (and parents!) to make observations of the
night sky. Students can use chapters 18-21 in the textbook to help them, and as
always, be on the lookout for current events and discoveries regarding our
topics of study.
This website will serve as an important tool for students during the unit. Use the information, videos, links, and other resources to complete assignments and earn credit for participation.

There's An App for That!
Make observing the night sky easier if you have a smart phone by downloading Google SkyMap (free) for Android, or for iphone users, Starwalk ($2.99) or Spacejunk (free). If you find any other good astronomy apps, let me know!
Don't have a smartphone? Try Starry Night on your computer. |
